Burled Maple x Fall Foliage (7/7)
Burled Maple x Fall Foliage (7/7)
This piece is part of the Fall Foliage: A Tribute to Autumn series I completed in the Fall of '20 (7/7), which features real leaves I collected and preserved from my travels across Appalachia from North Carolina to West Virginia, alongside the beautiful and unique wood I search out from across this beautiful mountain range I call home. This is the original piece where I tested the idea and inspired the rest of the series the following year.
I created this piece from one slab of burled maple, cut down in its center and inverted so the live edges both faced the center. I then built a mold for the pieces, and filled the space between the slabs with layers of resin - encasing in the center a variety of leaves picked from around the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina during peak leaf season. Each leaf was pressed in a book, within a box with a dehumidifier running for two and a half weeks to ensure dryness before being carefully placed within the resin. This piece was made in the fall of 2020 and all of the leaves have retained their color.
The base is made from ash, stained black and assembled with mortise and tenon joinery - no screws, glue or fasteners were used. The tenons are spalted maple.
Measuring 77" in length, 27" in width and 1.5" in thickness, this table is an excellent size for an entry way display piece, a desk or a hall table.
I have pictures of the build process I can share as well.
